Mount to Coast C1 Super Shoe Review

At GB Ultra Runner, we're constantly on the lookout for kit that can withstand the unique demands of the UK ultra-scene. While we spend a lot of time talking about trail lugs and waterproof membranes, a huge portion of an ultrarunner’s mileage, whether it’s high-volume training blocks or road-based ultras like the Grand Union Canal Race, happens on the tarmac.

The team at Mount to Coast kindly sent a pair of their latest shoe, the C1, for us to test out. Having spent significant time in their previous models (T1 and H1), I was keen to see if their latest offering could truly bridge the gap between high-mileage comfort and "super-shoe" performance.

Mount to Coast C1 Spec

  • Stack Height & Drop: 42mm in the heel and 36mm in the forefoot, giving it a 6mm drop.
  • Midsole: Dual-layer construction with a rubberised EVA bottom layer topped with a layer of CircleCELL foam.
  • Lacing: TUNEDFIT dual lacing system.
  • Weight: ~283g for a UK size 9.5.
  • Price: £170 (at the time of writing).

First Impressions and Fit

Straight out of the box, the C1 looks like a serious contender. It’s a non-plated "super shoe" designed specifically for those who measure runs in hours rather than minutes.

The C1 features Mount to Coasts signature TUNEDFIT dual lacing system which allows you to adjust the tension of the forefoot and the midfoot independently. For me, this has been a game-changer, especially when your feet begin to swell. Being able to loosen the toe box while keeping a secure lockdown at the heel is a luxury during long efforts.

In terms of sizing, I found them true to size and there's a generous amount of room in the toe box, giving it a nice "wide fit" feel.

The Midsole

The C1 sits on a massive stack of foam (42mm in the heel, 36mm in the forefoot, for a 6mm drop). It uses a dual-layer construction: a rubberised EVA bottom layer topped with a generous slab of CircleCELL, the same supercritical foam found in their award-winning H1 running shoe.

Mount to Coast claims CircleCELL offers energy return comparable to PEBA (the stuff in top-tier carbon racers) but with double the lifespan. On the road, this translates to a ride that feels plush but surprisingly poppy. It doesn't feel like you're sinking into marshmallows, instead it feels like the shoe is working with you to maintain turnover as your legs tire.

Stability and Build

For a shoe with such a high stack height, it feels nice and stable. This is thanks to a wider base and higher sidewalls that cradle the foot. At 283g (UK size 9.5), it’s decent weight for a shoe with this much protection.

The upper is a lightweight engineered mesh which, during some of our warmer UK days, proved to be very breathable. The gusseted tongue is well-padded, and the ankle collar provides that "hug" you want from a comfort focused long-distance running shoe.

Outsole and Durability

The outsole features good rubber coverage. While I haven't had the chance to test these on a properly wet British winter road yet, the traction on dry pavement has been faultless.

It is important to remember: this is a road shoe. Don't expect it to handle the Pennine Way, but for urban ultras and canal paths, it’s right at home.

Price

At £170, the C1 is pushing into the premium category. If you’re looking for a value-oriented budget running shoe, this isn't it. However, if you consider the cost per mile, the value proposition shifts. Given Mount to Coast’s reputation for longevity and the durability of the CircleCELL foam, I expect these to withstand a lot of usage.

Final Verdict: Are Mount To Coast C1 Running Shoes Good?

The Mount to Coast C1 feels like the brand may have found the perfect formula. It strikes a good balance between cushioning, stability and energy return.

Best for:

✅ High-mileage daily training.
✅ Road ultramarathons (50k to 100 miles+).
✅ Runners who want "super shoe" foam without the aggressive stiffness of a carbon plate.

If you’re lining up for a long-distance road effort and want a shoe that looks after your feet from the first mile to the last, the C1 should be at the top of your list.
