Salomon Aero Glide 4 GRVL Shoe Review

Whether you're navigating the concrete jungle or tackling loose gravel on a canal towpath, the "road-to-trail" category is becoming the sweet spot for many UK runners. At GB Ultra Runner, we're always on the hunt for gear that can handle the grit of training for an ultra without sacrificing the comfort needed for those longer sessions.

The Salomon Aero Glide 4 GRVL is a shoe designed for exactly that: the "gravel" spectrum. Salomon kindly sent me a pair to try out so I’ve spent the last week putting them through their paces, racking up just over 35km across a couple of short recovery efforts and one longer 20km run.

First Impressions and Fit

Right out of the box, the Aero Glide 4 GRVL looks the part. The design is modern and arguably one of the better-looking "hybrid" shoes on the market. But looks only get you so far.

The upper is an engineered mesh that feels slightly thicker than your standard road racer. While some might worry about breathability, and it is admittedly a touch warmer than your typical thinner mesh, I think the trade-off is worth it. This extra thickness helps keep your foot firmly centred over the 41mm foam stack, making you feel secure and stable. There are also a few minimal overlays across the shoe, with more over the toe box, for reinforcement to improve durability

Sizing Tip: I’m a standard UK 9.5 and found these to be true to size. The forefoot is surprisingly accommodating and you don't feel "squeezed" like you might in some tighter fitting models.

Salomon optiFOAM 2 Midsole

The midsole is comprised of Salomon's optiFOAM 2 which is springy and responsive without feeling too bouncy. Combined with the Reverse Camber (rocker) geometry, the shoe encourages a very smooth roll-through.

Despite the high stack, it doesn’t feel disconnected. It’s a "maximalist" shoe that still feels agile. The weight, around 285g for my 9.5, is impressive given how much protection you’re getting underfoot.

Salomon Aero Glide 4 GRVL Outsole and Grip

It’s important to manage expectations here. The 2.5mm lugs are "gravel-specific," meaning they are designed for traction on loose surfaces without the "clunky" vibration of deep lugs on pavement.

During my testing, I stuck to a mix of pavement, hard-pack gravel tracks and some grass sections.

• On Road/Gravel: Seamless. You genuinely forget you're wearing a "trail" shoe on the tarmac.
• On Grass/Light Trail: Adequate. It handles parkland and towpaths with ease.
• The Limit: This is not a shoe for technical trails or deep Lakeland mud. If you hit wet, off-camber clay or steep, technical terrain, you will find the limit of the 2.5mm lugs very quickly.

Salomon QuickLace Neo System

Salomon has updated their signature lacing system here. The QuickLace Neo uses slightly thicker laces and a new toggle with two push-buttons for release. It feels a bit more robust, and the gusseted, padded tongue ensures there’s no "lace bite".

Final Verdict: Are Salomon Aero Glide 4 GRVL good?

The Salomon Aero Glide 4 GRVL is a fantastic "door-to-trail" shoe for those easy day runs that involve a couple of miles of pavement before hitting the canal or the woodland paths. This shoe transitions between those worlds seamlessly.

If you're looking for an everyday running shoe that can handle a bit of everything (winter road miles, gravel tracks and light trails) while keeping your legs fresh for your next big race, this could be a fantastic option. It’s functional, stylish, and remarkably comfortable.

One final note: The Salomon Aero Glide 4 GRVL is a hybrid shoe that excels at everyday running on mixed light terrain (paved surfaces, city parks and hard-packed canal towpaths). It's built for the "door-to-trail" transition rather than the deep wilderness.

If you're looking for an all-rounder trail shoe that's capable of more technical or mountainous terrain, I’d recommend looking at the Salomon Ultra Glide 4 instead. But for everything in between? The Aero Glide 4 GRVL is a fantastic, cushioned gravel shoe.
