UTMB Mandatory Red Light Rule for 2026

UTMB Mandatory Red Light Rule for 2026

UTMB’s New Mandatory Red Light Rule for 2026: What You Need to Know & How to Kit Up

If you are currently dialling in your mandatory kit list for Chamonix, you will want to double-check your headtorch setup before packing your bags.

For 2026, HOKA UTMB Mont-Blanc organisers have introduced a rule requiring runners to carry and use a forward-facing red light during specific night time sections of the race.

While trail runners are plenty used to jumping through hoops for mandatory gear, from waterproof jackets with taped seams to survival blankets, this particular addition marks a massive shift in how major mountain races manage their environmental impact.

Here is a breakdown of why UTMB made the change, how strictly it will be enforced and the best gear solutions to make sure you stay compliant without blowing your kit budget.

Why The Switch To Red Light?

The new requirement centres around wildlife conservation, specifically targeting the passage through the Contamines-Montjoie Nature Reserve.

Thousands of runners charge through this section in the dead of night, creating a solid beam of white light across the trails. White light severely disrupts the local nocturnal fauna, disorienting birds, disturbing native mammals and disrupting natural hunting and mating behaviours.

By forcing runners to switch over to a forward-facing red light along this non-technical, uphill stretch, race directors hope to dramatically soften our impact on the reserve's delicate ecosystem.

It is widely believed that this will set a precedent for other international ultras, kickstarting a broader trend towards biodiversity-first mandatory kit lists across the globe.

Don't Risk a Time Penalty

UTMB race marshals will be strictly monitoring the red light zone. Failing to switch over, or failing to have a compliant red light in your pack, will result in penalties ranging from strict time additions to outright disqualification.

Upgrade To A Red Light Setup

You dom't necessarily need to buy a brand-new main torch to meet the guidelines, though some purpose-built options offer serious performance upgrades if you are due an overhaul.

Here are two of the best solutions currently on the market:

1. The Budget Fix: Petzl’s Dedicated Clip-On Red Filter

If you already run with a modern Petzl setup, you are in luck. Instead of forcing runners to buy a whole new torch, Petzl released a lightweight, 5g red filter designed to clip directly onto compatible models.

  • Compatible models: Petzl NAO RL and SWIFT RL.
  • Why it works: It allows you to transform your high-output white beam into a soft red beam instantly without cluttering your running vest with extra gear.
  • How to grab one: Petzl has been making these available through their European distribution channels and select stockists around Chamonix and Courmayeur.

2. The Built-For-Purpose Powerhouse: NITECORE UT27 MB

If you prefer a dedicated headtorch designed specifically for ultra-distance demands rather than fiddling with clip-on plastic filters, NITECORE’s updated UT27 MB is built precisely with this rule in mind.

Unlike most standard headtorches where the red mode is merely a low-powered, secondary thought for reading maps inside a tent, the UT27 MB packs serious punch:

  • 150 Lumens Red Light: Bright enough to clearly illuminate technical footplacement on dark trails, not just a faint glow.
  • 70-Metre Range: Outstanding beam projection for a red-spectrum light, keeping your sightline clear while keeping wildlife safe.
  • Dual-Fuel Versatility: Runs on a rechargeable Li-ion battery pack or standard AAAs, making it an ideal choice for multi-night mountain ultras.

UTMB’s Mandatory Red Light

While adding yet another item to an already heavy pack can feel frustrating, protecting the trails we love to run on has to remain a priority. A 5g filter or a quick headtorch swap is a tiny compromise for being allowed to race through some of the most breath taking protected land on earth.

Double-check your lighting setup during your upcoming night-training blocks so operating your red light becomes second nature before you line up under the arch in Chamonix.
