Kailas Fuga EX330 Tail Shoe Review

If you haven’t heard of Kailas before, you certainly aren't alone. While they might not be a household name in the UK trail running scene just yet, this Chinese brand is growing in popularity in the global mountain and ultra running community.

To give you an idea of their pedigree, they're one of the headline sponsors of the legendary Tor des Géants. In fact, the "330" in the Fuga EX330 name is a direct nod to that iconic 330km mountain race. Kailas didn't just slap the race name on the shoe either, they enlisted the help of their pro team athlete Franco Collé to help design it. If you follow mountain running, you'll know Collé is a force of nature, an Italian runner who has won the Tor des Géants a staggering four times and recently secured a brilliant 3rd place finish at this year’s (2026) 100M Ultra-Trail Snowdonia.

With that kind of mountain heritage, we were keen to see how they handled the UK terrain and thankfully, Kailas sent us a pair to test out. I recently took them out for a 20km trail run and here's how they stacked up.

Fit, Upper and Lacing System

Straight out of the box, the upper feels robust. Kailas uses what they call their XDiMESH multidimensional mesh. It's incredibly breathable, which is a big plus, and feels rugged enough to take a beating, aided by plenty of structural overlays across the shoe. Of course, long-term durability is something only time (and plenty of miles) will tell, but the initial build quality is promising. The inside is also treated with a breathable anti-bacterial lining to keep things fresh.

When it comes to sizing, in my experience they seem to run a little large. Once I actually started running in them my feet felt secure, but depending on your foot shape, you might want to consider dropping down half a size. In terms of width, they aren't exceptionally wide. If you’re transitioning from a wide-toe-box brand like Topo Athletic, the fit will feel quite snug. I found the fit much more akin to a Salomon, which suited my feet fine with no rubbing or irritation on my test run.

One of the standout features is the two-section lacing system. If you can imagine a cross between Salomon’s Quicklace and the dual-lace setup from Mount to Coast, you’re in the right ballpark. It uses a single lace but features two quick-draw toggles, one at the top where you'd normally expect it, and a secondary one further down the midfoot. This allows for a good amount of personalisation, letting you lock down the lower foot while keeping the top slightly looser, or vice versa. The gusseted tongue has a moderate amount of padding and features a handy little lace pocket to tuck the excess away. One thing I will say, it would be nice if the lace pocket was a touch bigger.

Midsole and Grip

Underfoot, you're getting a deep 39mm heel stack of Supercritical foam. You might expect a shoe with this much foam to feel overly plush or squishy, but it actually leans a little firm. I’d class the Fuga EX330 as a technical mountain shoe, and that touch of firmness can keep you feeling connected to the ground, giving you stability over jagged rocks.

The midsole also features a fairly aggressive rocker geometry. When you decide to up the pace or hit a flatter, runnable section, you can feel that supercritical foam come to life, helping to propel your foot forward and promoting an efficient running motion.

Flipping the shoe over, Kailas hasn't messed around with the grip. You get a Vibram® Megagrip outsole featuring a mixture of 4mm and 6mm traction lugs. 

Final Verdict: Are Kailas Fuga EX330 Good Tail Shoes?

After my initial miles, I’m impressed by the Chinese brand. The Kailas Fuga EX330 is a robust, well-thought-out shoe built for proper mountain races.

What is the Kailas Fuga EX330 Best for?

Mountain and technical trails, comfortably hitting the sweet spot for distances between 50k and 100k.

Price: At £150 here in the UK, the EX330 sits at a reasonable price point for a mountain focused ultra shoe. It’s certainly not the cheapest on the market, but with a Vibram Megagrip outsole and supercritical foam, it is far from the most expensive, offering decent value for money.
