I’ve had my eye on Topo Athletic for a while now, and it feels as though they’ve developed a bit of a cult following due to their commitment to a natural foot shape and a roomy toe box. So when Topo were kind enough to send me a pair of the new Vista trail shoes to test out, I knew I had to give them a proper baptism of fire. Now I'm fully a wear of the golden rule: “Nothing new on race day”, but after a couple of short exploratory runs, I felt confident enough to ignore my own advice. So I laced them up, headed to the start line, and put them through their paces during the 50 Mile Yellow Belly Winter Ultra.

Topo Vista Fit

The first thing you notice about Topo is the shape. Unlike the aggressive, pointed profiles of some brands, the Vista features an anatomical toe box. It’s wide, roomy and designed to let your toes splay naturally.

For 50+ mile efforts, this is a game-changer. As the hours tick by and your feet begin to swell, that extra real estate prevents the dreaded "toe-pinch". Despite the wide front, the midfoot remains snug, and the heel lockdown is solid. I didn't experience any heel slip or internal sliding.

Cushioning and Stability

The Topo Vista sits on a beefy 38mm heel and 33mm forefoot stack (a 5mm drop). On paper, that sounds like a tall, tippy shoe. In reality, it doesn't ride nearly as high as those numbers suggest. Thanks to a wide, stable base, I felt planted throughout the run.

The midsole uses Topo’s ZipFoam™ which strikes a lovely balance. It’s cushioned enough to save your legs from the relentless pounding of an ultra, yet it retains enough response so you don’t feel like you’re running through wet sand. There is a noticeable rocker geometry here, too, which helps roll you forward and makes the shoe feel lighter on the foot than the 309g weight suggests.

Surviving the British "Mud-Fest"

The Yellow Belly Winter ultra was, in true British fashion, an absolute mud-fest. We’re talking bogs, slick clay and waterlogged fields.

The Vista features a Vibram® Megagrip outsole with 4mm lugs. In most scenarios, 4mm is the "sweet spot" for trail shoes, enough bite but not so aggressive that they feel awkward on hard-packed sections. In the absolute worst of the winter sludge, I did wonder if a 5mm lug might have offered a tiny bit more "bite," but to be honest in some of those Yellow Belly bog sections I think something like a Mudclaw would have been more appropriate. However, the Megagrip compound and 4mm lugs gave me plenty of confidence that they're more than capable of tackling most trails in normal conditions.

Speaking of water, the FKT Insole deserves a shout-out. It’s a closed-cell beaded foam designed to drain quickly. My feet were wet for hours, but the shoes drained quickly and never felt too heavy, which is great for long-distance comfort.

The Finer Details

• The Tongue: I’m a bit of a stickler for tongues, I can’t stand the ones that are too short. The Vista’s tongue is "just right", lightly cushioned without being bulky, and it features a clever loop that the laces pass through to keep it centred and in place.
• Gaiter Compatibility: If you’re a gaiter wearer, you’ll appreciate the universal system. There’s a Velcro attachment at the heel and a traditional loop at the front. Simple and effective.
• Price: At £155, they sit right in the middle of the market for a premium, long-distance trail shoe. Given the build quality and the Vibram sole, it feels like fair value.

Final Verdict: Are Topo Vista Shoes Good For Ultramarathons?

Absolutely, If you’re looking for a shoe to carry you through a 100k or a 100 miler, the Topo Vista should be high on your list. While it isn't the lightest shoe on the shelf, I will happily trade a few extra grams for the stability, protection and comfort it provides over the long haul.

It’s a stable, cushioned, and "foot-friendly" workhorse that can handle the unpredictable terrain of the UK. After 50 miles of mud and grit, I’m thoroughly impressed. I’m already looking forward to seeing how the rest of the Topo line-up compares.
