Montane Lakeland 100 Mile Ultra Marathon

The Montane Lakeland 100 Mile Ultra Marathon, also known as the 'Ultra Tour of the Lake District', is a renowned non-stop ultra marathon that completes a comprehensive circular route encompassing the vast fells of the Lake District National Park.

Course

The 104 mile route forms a single, continuous clockwise loop, commencing and concluding in Coniston. The course is almost entirely comprised of public bridleways and footpaths, weaving through a diverse range of Lakeland valleys and contouring fells. While it typically does not ascend the most popular mountain summits, the route is characterised by its relentless undulations, providing consistent and often steep climbs and descents across rugged, rocky, and technical terrain.

The route explores areas including the Dunnerdale fells, Eskdale, Wasdale, and Buttermere before reaching Keswick. From there, it extends towards Matterdale and Haweswater, eventually returning via Kentmere, Ambleside, and Elterwater to the Coniston finish. A significant portion of the race is undertaken during the night, demanding proficiency in navigation and resilience in darkness.

Support

The Montane Lakeland 100 operates as a semi-supported event. Private crewing is generally not permitted along the course, although runners may be seen by family or friends in designated towns passed by the route. Comprehensive support is provided at 14 fully staffed, compulsory checkpoints. These aid stations offer a wide range of hot and cold food options, drinks and medical assistance, designed to re-energise runners.

The Montane Lakeland 100 Mile Ultra Marathon is suited to experienced ultra-runners only and to gain a place, runners must have completed one of the following:

  1. You must have completed the Montane Lakeland 50 in less than 16 hours, dated 2023-2025
