Take on the original Centurion race and one of the UK's most cherished 100 milers. The South Downs Way 100 is an epic point-to-point ultramarathon across the entire length of a spectacular National Park, from the ancient capital of Winchester to the triumphant seaside finish in Eastbourne.
Famed for its stunning views, runnable trails and relentlessly rolling hills, the SDW100 (South Downs Way 100 Miler) is a true classic. Itβs a rite of passage for many British ultrarunners and the second jewel in the Centurion 100 Mile Grand Slam crown.
The course is a perfect representation of what makes the South Downs so special. Over the 100 mile (161km) distance, you will tackle a formidable 3,800m (12,700ft) of elevation gain. While the chalk paths are generally non-technical, the sheer relentlessness of the rolling hills is what defines this challenge.
Your journey starts just outside Winchester and follows the historic chalk ridgeline of the South Downs Way National Trail. The route is almost entirely rural, offering expansive, panoramic views across southern England and out to the English Channel. You will traverse ancient forts, pass picturesque villages, and run through beautiful woodlands. The course is very exposed, meaning that on a clear day the sun can be as much of a challenge as the hills, but the stunning scenery is more than worth the effort.
The final, iconic miles take you over the breath taking Seven Sisters before a hero's welcome on the athletics track in Eastbourne.
The SDW100 is the quintessential British 100 mile ultra. Its runnable, non-technical nature makes it an achievable goal for first-timers who have put in the hill training, while also offering a fast course for experienced runners to chase a time. The 14 fully-stocked aid stations are legendary, and the support from the Centurion community of staff and volunteers is second to none.
