If you think running in London is all about dodging traffic and pounding the pavement, the Beyond London 55km Ultra is here to change your mind. This isn't your standard city marathon; it’s a proper adventure that takes you "beyond" the concrete jungle and into the hidden green corridors that circle the capital.
Organised as part of the "Beyond Trails" series, this event offers a unique point-to-point journey that follows the southern section of London’s famous Capital Ring footpath. It’s the perfect "urban ultra", accessible enough for first-timers but diverse enough to keep experienced runners engaged from start to finish.
The 55km route is a journey of discovery, linking up ancient woodlands, parks, disused railway lines, and towpaths. Starting in Woolwich, you will leave the Thames behind and head south-west, traversing a surprising amount of green space.
With approximately 575m of elevation gain, the profile is undulating rather than mountainous. It offers enough hills to make it a challenge, especially the kick up to Crystal Palace, but remains runnable throughout.
Beyond London is designed to be inclusive. The event typically operates a 10-hour cut-off, which equates to a steady run-walk pace, making it welcoming for those stepping up to ultra distance for the first time.
