Experience the legendary atmosphere of one of Britain’s most iconic challenge events on a slightly shorter, but equally spectacular, scale. The Fellsman Dart is a breathtaking 30 mile (48km) fell race that captures the pure essence of the Yorkshire Dales.
For over six decades, the full 61 mile Fellsman has struck fear and excitement into the hearts of ultra runners. Now, organised by the deeply dedicated volunteers of the Keighley Scout Service Network, the Fellsman Dart offers an incredibly exciting alternative. Designed for those who want to experience the rugged beauty and immense challenge of the high fells without the commitment of the full 60+ mile traverse, the Dart ultramarathon is a masterclass in challenging off-road endurance.
Make no mistake: a "shorter" Fellsman does not mean an easy Fellsman. This 50km ultramarathon is a serious, high-level mountain challenge that demands respect and solid fell running experience.
The Terrain: You will be tackling the legendary, unforgiving terrain of the Yorkshire Dales. Expect a punishing mix of steep, rocky ascents, fast grassy descents, and plenty of trackless, energy-sapping bog.
The Route Profile: The Dart traditionally covers the second half of the main Fellsman route, meaning you will face significant elevation gain. You will cross some of the highest and wildest moorland in the region, navigating severe ascents before plunging into the deep valleys below.
The Elements: The northern weather in late April is notoriously unpredictable. You must be prepared for anything from glorious spring sunshine to freezing, horizontal rain and zero-visibility clag.
Self-Navigated: You are entirely responsible for finding your way between the checkpoints. While GPS devices and GPX files are permitted, you must carry a physical map and compass and possess the skills to use them. If the weather closes in on the high fells, your map-reading ability will be essential.
Safety & Tracking: Despite the wild nature of the route, safety is paramount. All runners are issued with GPS trackers, allowing race HQ to monitor your position across the remote moorland.
The hallmark of any Fellsman event is the unparalleled support from the Keighley Scout Service Network. You will be serviced by a series of incredibly well-drilled checkpoints. The volunteers are famous for their efficiency, their warmth, and their incredible spreads of food. Expect hot drinks, biscuits, and serious encouragement to keep your legs moving toward the finish line.
The Fellsman Dart is the perfect stepping stone. If you have always wanted to experience the prestige, the history, and the brilliant community of The Fellsman but are not quite ready for the 61 mile distance, the Dart is your ideal race. It offers world-class fell running, brutal climbs, and an authentic, grassroots atmosphere that big commercial races simply cannot match.
