There are ultramarathons, and then there is The Fellsman. Running for over 60 years, this is one of the most iconic, prestigious, and relentlessly tough challenge events on the British circuit. Oozing with history and character, it is an absolute rite of passage for serious fell runners and long-distance walkers.
Staffed entirely by incredibly dedicated volunteers, The Fellsman is a spectacular point-to-point 100k ultramarathon across the Yorkshire Dales. It is a high-level, gruelling route that demands deep reserves of physical fitness, mental resilience, and absolute respect for the unpredictable northern weather.
This is not a race for the faint-hearted or the under-prepared. The Fellsman covers approximately 61 miles (98km) of remote, rugged moorland, with a staggering 3,352m (11,000ft) of elevation gain.
The Terrain: Expect everything from fast, bouncy grassy tracks and steep, rocky climbs to miles of trackless, energy-sapping bog. You will be traversing the high fells of the Yorkshire Dales, navigating severe ascents, and plunging into deep valleys.
The Elements: The Fellsman is legendary for its weather. Even in late April, you can be subjected to blistering heat, freezing clag, howling winds, or horizontal rain, often all on the same day.
Self-Navigation: You must know how to navigate. While GPX files and GPS devices are now permitted, you must still carry a physical map and compass and possess the knowledge to use them in an emergency. If the clag descends on the high moorland, your map-reading skills will be your only way off the hill.
Tracking and Safety: The organisers take your safety incredibly seriously. Alongside a strict kit check before the start line, all runners are provided with live GPS trackers so race HQ can monitor your progress across the remote fells.
Taking on the Fellsman is a massive badge of honour in the UK ultra-running scene. It is a brilliant, grassroots event that shuns commercial glitz in favour of pure, unadulterated fell running. If you want to test your mountaincraft, experience the wildest parts of the Yorkshire Dales, and be supported by the absolute best volunteers in the business, this is the event for you.
