Are you ready to trace the steps of a Victorian legend through one of Britain's most stunning landscapes? The Isaac’s Tea Trail Ultra is not just a race, it's a 37 mile (59.5km) looped ultra marathon that starts and finishes in the charming village of Allendale, right in the heart of the North Pennines.
This is an ultra that will test your legs and reward your senses. The route, which follows the famous trail named after the 19th century tea seller and fundraiser Isaac Holden, is set entirely within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and UNESCO Global Geopark.
The course guides you through a truly varied landscape. You’ll find yourself navigating along meandering riverside paths, crossing flower-filled hay meadows and climbing up onto open, heather-clad moors. The terrain is a fantastic mix of farmland tracks, stoney trails, quiet country lanes and classic grassy "sheep trods." With around 1,224m (4,018ft) of elevation, it’s a course that keeps you working but the views are more than worth the effort.
This is a self-navigating ultra, which adds to the sense of adventure. The route follows the waymarked Isaac's Tea Trail but you will need to keep your wits about you. A GPX file is provided on the official race website and you'll want to be comfortable with following either the map or a device.
The event is well-known for its friendly and supportive atmosphere. With a generous 12-hour cut-off, it’s a brilliant challenge for first-time ultra runners who are ready to step up the distance. If you're not quite ready for the full solo distance, why not grab a couple of mates? The race also offers a relay option for teams of three, so you can soak up the atmosphere and tackle a section each.
