The Jedburgh Three Peaks Ultramarathon is a spectacular 38-ish mile ultramarathon set in the heart of the Scottish Borders. Blending historic landscapes with gruelling climbs, this celebrated event takes runners from the historic town of Jedburgh to the iconic Eildon Hills and back. With its legendary friendly atmosphere and unforgettable course, it has become a firm favourite fixture in the UK ultra-running calendar.
Starting and finishing at the Jed Thistle Pavilion in Jedburgh, the fully marked course offers a mesmerising catalogue of Scottish Borders scenery. Over 30 miles of the route are entirely off-road, giving runners a true trail experience. You will traverse forest trails, hillside paths, open fields, and picturesque riverbanks.
The route is famous for its eclectic mix of terrain. Expect the unexpected, as you navigate everything from quiet country lanes, a wobbly bridge, and wooden staircases to disused railway lines, historic gravestones, and—depending on the Scottish weather—a fair amount of mud.
The defining feature of the race is the ascent of the Eildon Hills. These extinct volcanoes demand a tough climb but reward runners with unrivalled, sweeping views of the surrounding countryside. The loop of the 'Three Peaks' is traditionally run anti-clockwise, taking participants past the Rhymer's Stone, up and over the hills, and down through the village of Bowden before beginning the return leg to Jedburgh.
For those who don't fancy tackling the full 61 kilometres on their own, the organisers offer a highly popular four-person relay option. The relay changeovers take place at the main ultramarathon checkpoints, breaking the race into manageable yet challenging stages of approximately 10, 7, 11 and 10 miles. It’s a fantastic way for running clubs and friends to experience the electric atmosphere of the event together.
