Take on the "Northern Loop" in all its autumnal glory. The Nidderdale Way 51K Ultra (32 Miles) is a proper runner’s tour of one of Yorkshire’s most stunning, yet often overlooked, dales.
Held in late October, this race offers a spectacular end-of-season challenge. While the full Nidderdale Way forms a figure-of-eight, the 32 mile (51km) option focuses on the rugged and remote northern section. Starting and finishing in the charming town of Pateley Bridge, you’ll tackle steep climbs, sweeping moorland views, and the industrial heritage of the Scar House Reservoir area.
Make no mistake: with 1,400m (4,700ft) of elevation gain, this is a serious undertaking. The terrain is a mix of hard-packed trails, grassy trods, and reservoir paths.
You’ll head out from Pateley Bridge towards the wilder upper dale, passing through Lofthouse and the remote village of Middlesmoor, a place that feels like the edge of the world. From there, it’s a high-level traverse with big skies before descending back via Wath to the finish.
Important Note: Unlike other Punk Panther events, this race is NOT taped. The Nidderdale Way is a well-waymarked long-distance footpath, and you are expected to follow the permanent signage. You must be competent with a map or have the GPX file loaded on your device. This adds a layer of genuine adventure to the day, you have to keep your head up and your wits about you!
There is something special about Pateley Bridge in the autumn. The route feels remote and wild, yet you are never too far from civilization. Plus, the finish line hospitality at the Cricket Club is legendary: expect homemade hot food (Pie, chilli, cheese toasties) to warm you up after a long day in the hills.
