If you’re looking for a 50km ultra that packs a serious punch in terms of scenery, the Ultra X Wales 50K is hard to beat. Taking place on the Sunday of the Ultra X Wales weekend, this race offers a perfect single-day challenge in the heart of the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons).
Based near Abergavenny, this event gives you a taste of the wild, rugged beauty that South Wales is famous for, without requiring a multi-day commitment. It’s a fantastic option for runners looking to step up to the 50km distance or for seasoned pros wanting a fast, scenic day out on the trails.
The route explores the stunning Black Mountains, taking you away from the busier tourist tracks and into the "hidden" valleys and ridgelines of the park. With a technicality rating of 3/5, it’s a proper trail race, expect a mix of fast, runnable sections and some steep, lung-busting climbs that reward you with incredible panoramic views.
The course is fully marked, so you can switch off your navigation brain and just enjoy the run. As a UTMB Index Race (50K category), it’s also a great way to bank some points for future adventures.
The 50km race kicks off bright and early on Sunday morning (typically at 07:00). You’ll be sharing the finish line atmosphere with the 110km runners completing their second day, which creates a brilliant sense of community at the end.
For a challenging, beautiful, and brilliantly supported day in the Welsh mountains, the Ultra X Wales 50K is a must-do. For full details, visit the official Ultra X website.
