Take a trip up to Abergavenny. The Porth i Gymru Ultra Marathon (PIGUM) is a spectacular 50km (30 mile) circular adventure that tackles the iconic peaks surrounding the "Gateway to Wales."
Returning in July, the PIGUM is the summer highlight of the Pegasus Ultra Running calendar. While the name translates to "Gateway to Wales," donโt be fooled into thinking this is a gentle entrance. With over 1,660m (5,400ft) of elevation gain packed into 50km (30 miles), this is a race with serious bite, offering glorious panoramic views across the Brecon Beacons and South West England.
Starting and finishing in the historic market town of Abergavenny, the course is a love letter to the Black Mountains. The route is 80% trail and weaves through the ridges of the Llanwenarth, Deri, and Rholben hills.
The undisputed highlight of the day is the conquest of the Sugar Loaf. Standing at 595m (1,955ft), this conical peak dominates the local skyline. You won't just run around it, you go right over the top. The climb is tough, but the 360 degree views from the summit, stretching from the Beacons to the Bristol Channel, are worth every drop of sweat.
As with all Pegasus events, the PIGUM champions inclusivity. There are no cut-off times. Whether you are a mountain goat racing for the podium or a first-time ultrarunner hiking the climbs to enjoy the view, you have as long as you need to finish. The race directors believe that if you have the courage to start, they have the patience to wait for you to finish.
The PIGUM 50K is the perfect summer mountain challenge. The distance makes it achievable for those stepping up to ultras, but the elevation profile ensures it remains a serious physical test. Combined with the "no cut-off" policy and the stunning backdrop of the Sugar Loaf, it is one of the friendliest and most scenic races in the Welsh calendar.
