Breakheart Backyard Ultra

The Breakheart Backyard Ultra is a one of a kind endurance event set against the striking backdrop of Breakheart Quarry nature reserve in the Gloucestershire Cotswolds. Following the traditional Backyard Ultra format, runners must complete a 4.167 mile (6.7 km) loop every hour, on the hour. The race has no set finish, only one runner will emerge victorious, continuing until all others can no longer continue.

Course

The 4.167-mile loop at the Breakheart Backyard Ultra is a demanding, mostly off-road course that winds through rugged stone quarry trails and dense woodland paths. Characterised by constant elevation changes, each lap includes a steady climb that tests runners endurance from the very start. While portions of the route offer wider, flatter reprieves, they’re balanced by challenging inclines, most notably the infamous “BIG's HILL,” which grows increasingly punishing with every hour. The mixed terrain calls for a durable trail shoe with excellent grip, as conditions range from loose stone to uneven forest floor. 

The event headquarters (race HQ) serves as the main base for all participants and their crews. Facilities include plumbed toilets, charging points for devices and a spacious camping area for tents. There is also an indoor area with a log fire to provide shelter and warmth during the cooler hours. Fundamental provisions are also provided, including hot and cold water (via Burco boilers) and a range of snacks for runners, although it is recommended you bring your own primary food and drink supplies.
