This is a backyard ultra with a truly unique twist. Set in the heart of Moray, Scotland, the Kinloss Backyard Ultra takes place within the Kinloss barracks training area. This isn't just a race; it's the headline event of the Kinloss Running Festival, and it's a backyard with a big heart, with all proceeds supporting SSAFA and the Royal Engineers Association.

If you’re looking for a last-one-standing event that’s flat, fast and unbelievably supportive, this is it.

BYU (Last One Standing) Format

If you're unfamiliar with Backyard Ultras, the format is a beautiful, brutal loop of logic. You have one hour to complete a 4.167 mile (6.7km) loop, every hour on the hour. If you're in the starting corral before the next bell rings, you go again. If you're not... your race is over!

The goal is to be the last person to answer that bell. There is no finish line. There is only "one more loop." The winner is the lone runner who completes a final loop, but everyone who toes the line is a hero, and every DNF (Did Not Finish) is a badge of honour.

Course

This is what sets the Kinloss Backyard Ultra apart. The course changes as the day does.

• The Day Loop (The Grind): During daylight, you're on a classic, flat, off-road loop. You'll tackle a mix of gravel trails, rough grass, a little sand, and some tarmac. It’s a proper test that keeps you on your toes.
• The Night Loop (The Flight): As darkness falls (from 9 pm), the race completely transforms. You move onto a 100% tarmac and runway loop. This is a flat, fast, hypnotic experience with no trip hazards. It’s just you, your headtorch beam, and the open runway.

The course is flat, so this isn't a battle against hills. It’s a pure battle of attrition.

The race village is a buzzing hub of activity. You'll have your own "base camp" (tent/gazebo) right at the start/finish, but you'll be surrounded by the energy of the other festival races (10k, 5k, Half Marathon). 

This is an 'At Large' affiliated race, meaning the winner gets their name on the list for a chance to compete at Big's Backyard Ultra, the world championships in Tennessee.
