Portland Pig Backyard Ultra Marathon
The Portland Pig Backyard Ultra Marathon offers an unlimited endurance race on the unique landscape of the Isle of Portland, Dorset. This event adheres to the standard "Backyard Ultra" format, requiring participants to complete a 4.167 mile (approximately 6.7 km) loop within one hour, continuously, until only one runner remains.
Course
The 4.167 mile loop is set entirely on the Isle of Portland, presenting a mixed-terrain course. Participants will navigate sections including grass, gravel, track, tarmac, and pavement. The course features consistent undulations with around 98m (323 feet) of elevation gain per lap, ensuring a continuous physical test.
A defining characteristic of this route is the varied scenery encountered on each circuit. Runners will pass a diverse array of landmarks, including prisons, the site of the London 2012 Olympic Rings, a local cricket club, active stone quarries (some featuring carvings), and an ex-Olympic sailing venue. The loop also offers extensive coastal vistas and is noted for passing a wallaby farm and alpacas. The repetitive nature of the course allows runners to become intimately familiar with its nuances over successive hours.
Participants are required to be self-sufficient regarding their food supply for the event's duration, bringing all necessary provisions. No outside assistance is permitted to runners once they are on the course. The use of running or walking poles is not allowed.
The Portland Pig Backyard Ultra is organised by BustinSkin Events and is noted for its professional yet friendly execution. The event is often recommended for both those new to the Backyard Ultra format and seasoned competitors. All who complete at least one lap receive a DNF (Did Not Finish) medal, while the ultimate winner earns a bespoke memento!
