The District Backyard Ultra by Heart and Soul Racing

How long can you keep the bell ringing? The District Backyard Ultra is a phenomenal test of pacing, psychologyand pure endurance set against the beautiful backdrop of the Lake District.

Brought to you by the passionate team at Heart and Soul Racing, this event fully embraces the infamous "Last One Standing" format. Whether you are stepping up to ultra-distance for the very first time or you are a seasoned 100 mile veteran looking to test your absolute physical limits, the Backyard format is the ultimate great equaliser.

Backyard Ultra Rules

If you are new to the Backyard Ultra (BYU) concept, the rules are beautifully simple but incredibly brutal:

  • The Distance: You must complete a 4.167-mile (6.7km) looped course.
  • The Time: You have exactly one hour to complete the loop.
  • The Catch: Every hour, on the hour, the bell rings, and you must line up to run the exact same loop again.
  • The Finish: The race only ends when there is just one runner left standing in the starting corral. Everyone else is technically a DNF (Did Not Finish).

If you run the loop in 45 minutes, you get 15 minutes to rest, eat, and sort your kit. If you run it in 59 minutes, you get 1 minute of rest before you go again. It is a brilliant psychological game where the fastest runner rarely wins; the victory goes to the most stubborn.

The Event Village and Support

The true magic of a Backyard Ultra happens in the Event Village. This is where your crew sets up your "camp" and where the incredible camaraderie of the BYU format shines.

  • Your Camp: You will have dedicated space to set up a small tent or gazebo. This is your sanctuary to sleep, change socks, and eat between loops.
  • Event Support: Heart and Soul Racing provide brilliant grassroots support. Expect country-themed race vibe with music, energy and character. If LSD is rave barn chaos, The District is its country cousin. Same Heart and Soul energy. Different soundtrack. Same rule though.

Are you ready to test your limits? Gather your crew, dial in your pacing strategy, and prepare for a weekend of beautiful suffering in the Lake District.
