Trails & Tarmac Back Yard Ultra - Summer Edition
This is the summer edition of the much-loved Trails & Tarmac Back Yard Ultra, an event that tests your endurance against the long daylight hours and the warmth of the Welsh summer. Set just outside Crickhowell, deep in the beautiful Black Mountains, this is the perfect stage to find out just how far you can push yourself.
The course is what makes this event special. True to its name, it’s a 4.167-mile (6.7km) loop split 50/50 between trail and tarmac. This isn't a technical mountain slog, it's a fast, runnable 'yard' designed for rhythm. With only one gradual climb and a short steep section, the rest is relatively flat, allowing you to bank precious minutes for recovery.
Backyard Ultra Rules
This is a classic "last one standing" event. The rules are beautifully simple, yet brutally hard:
- The Bell: You start on the hour, every hour.
- The Loop: You must complete the 4.167 mile yard and be back in the starting corral before the bell rings for the next lap.
- The Winner: The race continues, hour after hour, until only one runner is left to complete a final solo loop.
This format is the ultimate test of pacing, nutrition, and mental grit. How you manage your time between laps is just as important as the run itself.
What To Expect
The team at Limitless Trails knows how to look after runners. You can expect a fantastic aid station at HQ to keep you fed and watered, with hot food served after the fifth yard. Showers, toilets, and medics are all on-site.
They've also added a great twist to the format. While there can only be one winner, this isn't an all-or-nothing affair. Anyone who digs deep and completes 32 miles (8 laps) will earn a medal to celebrate achieving ultra distance. The last person standing, of course, takes home the winner's trophy.
