Montane Summer Spine Ultramarathon

The Montane Summer Spine Ultra Marathon is a non-stop, self-sufficient endurance event that traverses the entire 268-mile length of the Pennine Way National Trail. Recognised as one of Britain's most demanding ultra-marathons, the Summer Spine presents unique challenges associated with sustained effort over multiple days in varying summer conditions.

Course

The 268 mile route follows the Pennine Way National Trail from its southern origin in Edale to its northern terminus in Kirk Yetholm. The terrain is notably varied and often technical, encompassing rocky paths, extensive boggy moorland, and exposed ridgelines. Participants navigate diverse geographical sections, including the rolling hills of the Peak District, the limestone features of the Yorkshire Dales, the wild expanses of Northumberland National Park, and the concluding stages into the Scottish Borders.

While the summer edition avoids the specific challenges of winter ice and snow, runners must contend with the Pennine Way's inherent difficulties, such as highly variable British weather patterns (which can fluctuate significantly over 24 hour periods), substantial cumulative elevation, and the demands of continuous movement across multiple days and nights. Effective navigation skills are crucial, even during daylight hours, due to remote sections and areas where the path may be indistinct.

Crews and Pacers

The Montane Summer Spine operates as an unsupported race, meaning private crewing or external assistance is not permitted. Participants are required to carry a comprehensive mandatory kit throughout the duration of the event. Resupply points are available at designated checkpoints along the route, which provide essential provisions and medical support.

The Montane Summer Spine is suited for ultra-marathon runners with extensive experience, advanced navigation capabilities and the significant physical and mental resilience required for multi-day, self-supported racing in challenging mountain and moorland environments. It represents a significant benchmark within the UK ultra-running calendar.
