There are ultramarathons that test your legs, and then there are events designed to dismantle your mind. The Hill, curated by the legendary Mark Cockbain, falls firmly into the latter category.
This is not a sightseeing tour of Telford. This is a singular, brutal objective: run up a steep hill, run back down, and repeat until you have covered 160 miles or the 48 hour clock runs out.
The premise is terrifyingly simple. You have 48 hours to cover 160 miles.
The catch? You do it by running up and down the same hill. Repeatedly. Rising sharply from the Shropshire plain, The Wrekin is a legendary volcanic hill. For a casual walker, itβs a stiff Sunday climb. For a competitor in The Hill, it becomes a mountain of misery.
The course utilises the main track, a relentless, lung-busting gradient that offers no flat sections to recover. You are either grinding up or pounding your quads on the way down. The surface is hard, the gradient is unforgiving, and the summit is frequently battered by high winds and cold winter rain.
The Hill is for the runner who has grown bored of standard 100 milers. It is for the athlete who wants to strip away the distractions of navigation and changing scenery to focus purely on physical endurance and mental fortitude. It is monotonous, painful, and dark.
Finishers of The Hill earn more than just a result; they earn a reputation.
