If you are looking for a 100k ultra marathon that combines history, breath taking scenery and a fast, runnable profile, The Priory 100km Ultra is one to add to your bucket list immediately. Organised by Wild Deer Events, this point-to-point adventure takes you on a spectacular journey along the Northumberland coastline, linking two of the North East's most iconic landmarks.
The route begins in the shadow of the magnificent Bamburgh Castle, offering a dramatic start line setting. From there, you head south, following the coast all the way to the finish line at the majestic Tynemouth Priory. It is a true "A to B" journey, steeped in heritage and natural beauty.
One of the standout features of this event is its elevation profile. With approximately 730m (2,400ft) of elevation gain over the entire 100km distance, this is an exceptionally flat ultramarathon by UK standards. This makes it an ideal choice for first-timers looking to complete the distance, or for seasoned veterans hunting for a personal best.
As you wind your way down the coast, you’ll pass a roll-call of stunning locations, including: Beadnell Harbour, Dunstanburgh Castle, Craster Village (famous for its kippers!), Warkworth Castle and Seaton Sluice & Whitley Bay. The final stretch takes you through Cullercoats before the grand finale: an unforgettable finish through the historic gates of Tynemouth Priory.
This is a fully waymarked and supported event, so you won't need to worry about complex navigation, just keep the sea to your left and follow the markers!
A bag drop service is available at registration, transporting your belongings from the start to the finish line at Tynemouth, and there are 5 well-stocked aid stations along the route.
For runners seeking a scenic, supported and flat 100km ultra in the UK, The Priory offers a perfect mix of endurance and sightseeing along one of the country's most beautiful coastlines. For the latest up-to-date info, including registration details, please visit the official race website.
