The Epona 100K Ultra Marathon

Named after the ancient Celtic goddess of horses, the Epona 100km ultra is a race that demands immense stamina, sure-footedness and a wild spirit. Taking you deep into the spectacular Black Mountains and the eastern edges of the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park, this is one of the most breathtaking mountain ultramarathons in the UK.

This 100km (approx. 62 mile) sister race to the flagship Epona 100 miler offers a slightly shorter, but no less brutal, challenge. It is the perfect arena for seasoned trail runners who want to test their climbing legs against a serious Welsh ultramarathon and experience the remote, rugged beauty of the mountains.

The Course

The 100km event is a spectacular point-to-point journey. Starting in the ancient, historic town of Talgarth and finishing in the bustling market town of Abergavenny, the route immediately throws you into the deep end of Welsh fell running.

  • The Terrain: You will be tackling a notoriously demanding mix of terrain. Expect to navigate high, exposed grassy ridgelines, steep rocky descents, technical single-track trails and the inevitable energy-sapping bogs that define Welsh mountain running.
  • The Peaks: The route takes in some of the most iconic peaks in the area. You will find yourself traversing the soaring, uninterrupted ridges of the Black Mountains, cresting the famous Sugar Loaf mountain near the finish and exploring deep, isolated valleys where the sense of wilderness is absolute.
  • The Elevation: Make no mistake, this is a climber's race. The 100km route packs in a punishing amount of vertical ascent. Your quads will be burning on the climbs, and your technical footwork will be tested on every sharp descent.

Why Run the Epona 100km?

It is a true purist’s mountain race. The Epona 100km offers an unfiltered, wild experience that shuns the manicured trails of more commercial events. If you want to push your physical limits, test your navigational skills, and experience the awe-inspiring, untamed beauty of the Welsh mountains, earning the Epona finisher's medal will be one of your proudest running achievements.
