Beast of the Beacons 40 Mile Ultra Marathon
Head into the heart of the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) for a race that bites back. The Beast of the Beacons 40 is a raw, rugged, and rewarding test of endurance set against the backdrop of Wales' most iconic peaks.
Organised by Limitless Trails, this ultra marathon takes place in mid-April, a time when the Welsh mountains can offer glorious spring sunshine or throw a final winter tantrum (snow is not unheard of!). Starting from Talybont-on-Usk, this is a true trail runner’s course, mixing technical rocky climbs, muddy forest tracks, and sweeping reservoir views.
Course
The 40 mile Ultra format features a devilish psychological twist: it is a two-lap race, but the second lap is run in reverse.
You will tackle two 20-mile loops, racking up a massive 2,570m (8,438ft) of elevation gain. The route explores the Talybont Reservoir, climbs high onto the ridges, and dives into the forestry. Just as you master the terrain on the first loop, you have to turn around and face it all again from the opposite direction. It keeps the mind engaged and the legs guessing.

The checkpoints are legendary. You won't just find water and gels; you’ll find a buffet of homemade cake, sandwiches, savoury snacks, and electrolytes. The marshals are experienced and encouraging, ready to get you back out on the trail when the fatigue sets in.
The Beast of the Beacons 40 Mile Ultramarathon it strikes the perfect balance between a serious mountain ultra and a friendly community event. The 16-hour cut-off is generous enough for determined mid-packers to finish, but the elevation makes it a genuine physical challenge. Plus, finishing at Gilestone Farm means you are perfectly placed for a post-race BBQ and a beer.
