Run to the Castle Ultramarathon - Winter Edition

Organised by How Hard Can It Be Events, the Winter Run to the Castle Ultra is a 42 mile point-to-point race that takes runners along the Welsh coastline during the colder, darker months.

While it follows the same scenic route as the summer Run to the Castle, the winter edition offers a distinctly different challenge. With reduced daylight hours, colder temperatures, and the likelihood of strong coastal winds sweeping in from the Irish Sea, this event tests runners' winter kit, pacing, and mental resilience.

Course

The course follows the established Wales Coast Path, taking runners on a northbound journey from an estuary village to a historic fortress.

  • The Terrain: The route features a varied mix of underfoot conditions. Runners will navigate sandy beaches, grassy clifftops, coastal dunes, forestry tracks and sections of paved paths. In winter, you can expect softer sand, muddy trail sections, and potentially higher tides, making footwear choice important (road-to-trail hybrid shoes are a common choice).
  • Running in the Dark: Because of the time of year, participants will complete a significant portion of the race in the dark. Navigating the coastal path by headtorch adds a layer of technical difficulty and requires focused attention to the trail.
  • The Finish: After approximately 42 miles, the race concludes with a short ascent to the 13th-century Harlech Castle, providing a clear and rewarding endpoint to a long winter's day.

The route features 4 separate checkpoints manned by volunteer marshals. These stations provide essential hydration and standard ultra-running food. In the winter edition, access to warm drinks at these checkpoints is a welcome feature.

The Wales Coast Path is generally marked with its distinctive shell logo. However, visibility is often reduced in winter. Runners are expected to carry a map or a downloaded GPX file of the exact race route to navigate smoothly, especially during the dark hours.

Winter Run to the Castle Ultra

If you are looking for a reliable way to maintain your endurance fitness through the off-season, the Winter Run to the Castle Ultra is an excellent choice. The relatively flat profile makes the distance manageable, while the winter conditions provide a solid opportunity to test your cold-weather gear and night-running skills. It serves as a great training run for larger winter expeditions or simply a rewarding standalone goal to keep you motivated during the darker months.
