Beast of the Blacks 40 Mile Ultra Marathon
Deep in the heart of the Welsh Marches lies a challenge that lives up to its name. The Beast of the Blacks is not just a race; it is a raw, rugged, and relentless ultra marathon in the majestic Black Mountains.
Organised by the Limitless Trails team, this event kicks off the spring racing season with a serious test of endurance. While the scenery is breath taking, think soaring ridges, ancient churches, and Red Kites circling overhead, the terrain is unforgiving. With over 3,385m (11,000ft) of elevation gain packed into 40 miles, this is a race for those who love to climb.
Course
The 40 mile Ultra format offers a unique psychological twist. The course consists of two 20 mile loops, but with a crucial difference: the second lap is run in reverse.
Starting from Longtown Hall, you will head straight up into the high ground. You’ll traverse forest trails, open ridges, and river crossings that showcase the wild beauty of the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park. Just when you think you’ve mastered the route, you turn around to face it all again from a completely different perspective.

Limitless Trails are renowned for their runner support. This is a fully marked course, meaning you can focus on your footing rather than a map (though carrying a backup GPX is mandatory).
The checkpoints are the stuff of legend. Forget a few lonely jelly babies; expect a proper feast. We’re talking homemade cake, sandwiches, savoury snacks, and electrolytes to keep the engine running. Plus, the medical team and marshals are some of the friendliest in the business, ready to pick you up when the "Beast" starts to bite
The Beast of the Blacks Ultramarathon is a race for the mountain lover. If you want a flat, fast PB course, look elsewhere.
