Cateran Trail 55 Mile Ultra Marathon

Looking for an ultra marathon with a bit of bite? Step onto the ancient paths of the Cateran Trail Ultra (CT55). This 55 mile loop through the Perthshire and Angus glens isn't just a run; it's a journey through the stomping grounds of Scotland's historic cattle raiders.

Run by the team at Rocket Events (Run Ya Rocket), this race has earned a reputation as a proper Scottish classic. It’s tough, it’s muddy, and the scenery is absolutely spectacular. If you want to experience the raw beauty of the Highlands without the sheer vertical punishment of the bigger mountain races, this is the perfect middle ground.

Course

The CT55 takes you on a 55 mile (88km) tour of some of the finest countryside in Scotland. Starting in the Spittal of Glenshee, you’ll tackle a circular route that packs in around 2,300m (7,500ft) of ascent.

The terrain is a real mixed bag, keeping your legs guessing (and complaining) the whole way. You’ll be running on ancient drove roads, farm tracks, and forest paths, with plenty of stiles to hop over, which become surprisingly difficult after 40 miles! The route winds through Glen Isla, Glen Shee, and Strathardle, offering huge views of the southern Cairngorms. It’s a landscape that feels wild and remote, yet you’re never too far from a supportive marshal or a checkpoint.

This is a race with real character. It’s got that "old school" ultra feel—friendly, unpretentious, but physically demanding. The loop format is great logistically and the 15-hour cut-off is generous enough to allow solid power-hikers to finish, while still keeping the racers honest.
