Ever fancied a proper point-to-point adventure that’s steeped in history? Well, this is a cracker. The Fife Pilgrim Way is a 55 mile (90km) ultra marathon that follows the footsteps of ancient pilgrims, all the way from the shores of the North Queensferry to a finish line beneath the ruins of St Andrews Cathedral.
This is an ultra that’s as much about the incredible sense of journey as it is about the running. It’s a modern-day pilgrimage for the ultra-running soul, brilliantly organised by the friendly team at Blast Running. Adding to the prestige, the Fife Pilgrim Way Ultra Marathon has been officially granted UTMB Index 100K status, making it a perfect qualifying race for those eyeing up the UTMB World Series.
This is a proper 90km (55 mile) test, taking you on a stunning tour of Fife. The route is a real mixed bag of Scottish scenery. You’ll start in North Queensferry, inspired by Queen Margaret's historic crossing, and then wind your way through ancient towns like Dunfermline, Markinch, and Ceres.
The course follows the waymarked Pilgrim Way, taking you through woodlands, across rolling farmland and finally, to the coast for that glorious finish in St Andrews. The route is "undulating", which as we all know, is runner's code for "it's never flat!" It’s a fast course if you’re feeling strong, but the constant, rolling hills will definitely keep you honest. Because it follows a fully waymarked trail, you can switch off the navigation faff and just focus on the run (and the views).
The point-to-point format makes it feel like a true adventure, and let's be honest, how many races finish in a town as iconic as St Andrews?
If you’re looking to step up your distance from a 50k ultra, this is a fantastic choice. It's a proper Scottish classic in the making.
