The Kendal to Preston Ultra 50 is a point-to-point ultra marathon that traverses a scenic 50 mile (approximately 80.4 km) route from the fringes of the Lake District into the heart of Lancashire. Organised by Lancashire Trails, this event offers a unique blend of historic waterways and varied countryside, making it accessible for a range of ultra-runners.
This 50 mile ultra embarks from Sedgwick, near Kendal, and concludes in Lea Town, outside Preston. A significant portion of the route closely follows and encircles the historic Lancaster Canal. This provides a predominantly runnable path, characterised by gentle undulations rather than steep climbs, contributing to its potential as a faster ultra course.
The terrain primarily consists of well-established trails and canal towpaths, guiding participants through a series of picturesque towns including Burton in Kendal, Carnforth, Lancaster, and Garstang. As the course progresses south, runners will experience diverse scenery, with expansive vistas towards Morecambe Bay on one side and the rolling landscapes of the Cumbrian and Lancashire hills and dales on the other. The route is clearly signed throughout its length.
The Kendal to Preston Ultra 50 is suited for ultra-runners seeking a scenic point-to-point challenge over a manageable elevation profile, suitable for both those aiming for their first 50 mile completion and experienced runners pursuing a fast course PB.
