The Montane Summer Sprint North Ultra offers a distinct endurance ultra marathon, tracing the concluding section of the Pennine Way National Trail. This 43 mile (approximately 69 km) event provides a focused challenge over the remote and undulating terrain of the northern Pennines, culminating at the Scottish border.
This 43 mile ultramarathon starts at Brown Rigg, guiding participants along the final, rugged segment of the Pennine Way National Trail. The course navigates through the expansive and often exposed Cheviot Hills, a region characterised by its rolling moorland, sections of boggy ground, and continuous elevation changes.
While a shorter distance within the larger Spine Race series, the Montane Summer Sprint North presents a substantial challenge due to the nature of the terrain and its remote setting. Participants will experience authentic Pennine Way conditions, which can involve varied underfoot surfaces and exposure to changeable weather, even in summer. The route is fully waymarked, providing directional guidance as it progresses towards the official end point of the Pennine Way at Kirk Yetholm.
The Summer Sprint North is designed as a largely self-sufficient ultra, with participants expected to carry all necessary supplies for the duration of the race.
The Montane Summer Sprint North Ultra is suited for trail runners seeking an accessible yet demanding introduction to the Pennine Way's northern sections, requiring strong navigation skills and resilience over challenging, exposed terrain. It is often seen as a great introduction to the Spine Race series.
