The Montane Winter Spine Sprint South Ultra Marathon offers an incredible endurance challenge, navigating the initial section of the Pennine Way National Trail in the depths of winter. This 46 mile (roughly 74 km) ultra offers a concentrated yet intense experience of Britain's most brutal trail, demanding exceptional resilience against harsh environmental conditions.
The 46 mile route commences from Edale, immediately propelling participants into the demanding terrain of the Peak District and subsequently into the Yorkshire Dales. The course navigates iconic sections, including the challenging ascent of Jacob's Ladder and the exposed, often desolate moorlands of Kinder Scout and Bleaklow.
The distinguishing feature of this event is its January scheduling. Runners must contend with severe winter conditions: sub-zero temperatures are common, often accompanied by strong winds, rain, sleet, or snow. The ground can be highly variable, ranging from frozen, icy sections to deep mud or consolidated snow, significantly impacting underfoot conditions and demanding careful footing. Despite the midday start, a substantial portion of the race will be conducted in darkness due to limited winter daylight hours. Navigation can be made more challenging by reduced visibility from adverse weather.
