The Salmon Run 43 Mile Ultramarathon

It's an ultramarathon, an environmental movement, and a community ritual all rolled into one. The Salmon Run Ultramarathon invites you to trace the epic migratory journey of the endangered Atlantic Salmon, running 43 miles upstream from the sea to the spawning grounds of Exmoor.

Organised by Wild Running in collaboration with Tidelines and the Westcountry Rivers Trust, this is not your typical ultra. It was created to celebrate the remarkable life cycle of a keystone species and to highlight the environmental challenges our rivers face, from rising temperatures to pollution and broken weirs. By running alongside the river, you physically empathise with the salmon's struggle to reach its destination.

Course

The journey begins at 08:00 am on the coast at Sideshore (Queen's Drive Space) in Exmouth. Leaving the salty estuary air behind, the route points resolutely inland and upstream.

You will follow the beautiful Exe Valley Way, a meandering, deeply green trail that tracks the River Exe through the heart of Devon. The route passes through the bustling paths of Exeter's Valley Park, historic river crossings, and quiet Devonshire villages, before making the final push into the steeper, wooded valleys of Exmoor National Park.

The race concludes on The Green in Dulverton. While the route is largely runnable and follows established paths, the accumulated ascent totals 1,050 metres (approx. 3,444 ft), ensuring your legs will feel the burn by the time you reach the spawning grounds.

If you want a silent, solitary race, this might not be it! The Salmon Run is famous for its vibrant community atmosphere.
