If you think a 50 mile ultra in the home counties sounds like a walk in the park, think again. The Centurion Wendover Woods 50 (WW50) is widely regarded as one of the toughest, most brutal 50 mile races in the UK.
Serving as the grand finale to the Centurion 50 Mile Grand Slam, this is a race that doesn’t just test your legs; it tests your spirit. It’s dark, it’s cold, it’s muddy, and it involves a dizzying amount of climbing. But completing "The Dark One" earns you serious bragging rights and one of the most hard-fought buckles in the business.
Forget scenic A-to-B journeys; the Wendover Woods 50 (WW50) is a mental and physical battle of attrition. The course consists of five loops of 10 miles, entirely contained within Wendover Woods.
While the forest is beautiful, the terrain is unrelenting. Each loop packs in a punishing 600m of elevation gain, meaning by the time you cross the finish line, you will have climbed 3,050m, that’s more than climbing Scafell Pike three times.
The climbs are short, sharp, and steep, often slick with November mud and covered in trip-hazard roots. The descents offer little respite, hammering your quads just in time for the next ascent.
Because of the looped nature, the atmosphere at the WW50 is unique. You pass through the main "Trig Point Field" HQ at the end of every 10 mile lap. This is both a blessing and a curse: you have regular access to your drop bag, hot food, and Centurion’s legendary support, but you also have to summon the willpower to leave the warmth and head back out into the cold dark woods... four times.
It’s a "Type 2 fun" classic. You don’t run this for a PB; you run it for the challenge. It’s the perfect winter motivator to keep your training honest through the autumn. If you can conquer the mud, the dark, and the vert of Wendover, you can conquer pretty much anything. Plus, the sense of camaraderie in that final loop, headtorches bobbing in the woods, is something truly special.
