As the longest and most demanding event of the William Wallace Running Festival, the 70k ultra is a truly epic test of endurance. Set against the dramatic backdrop of Stirling, Scotland, this spectacular 70 kilometre loop immerses runners in centuries of Scottish history. From ancient battlefields and royal hunting grounds to imposing castles and sweeping fells, this race invites you to write your own chapter of history in the heart of the Scottish countryside.
The 70km course is an unforgettable journey that combines historical landmarks with serious elevation and rugged terrain. Starting in the shadow of the Ochil Hills with the National Wallace Monument in full view, the route initially winds past the historic site of the Battle of Bannockburn.
Where the 70k truly distinguishes itself is its foray into the wilder Scottish landscapes. Runners will face a challenging climb up into the Campsie Fells and over Lewis Hill, rewarding them with stunning vantage points high above the North Third Reservoir. The trail then descends through King’s Park—formerly a royal hunting ground—and past the ancient gardens of the King’s Knot.
The second half of the race is just as spectacular. You will ascend towards the formidable Stirling Castle, taking in sweeping views across the River Forth, before passing the Keir Estate (historic home of SAS founder Sir David Stirling). After moving through the charming market village of Bridge of Allan, the route climbs once more to the Cockburn Reservoir and deep into the Ochil Hills. The final miles bring you through Jerah Forest and the conservation village of Blairlogie, returning via Cambuskenneth Abbey and a scenic riverside path to the finish.
Taking on 70 kilometres is a monumental challenge, which is why the organisers offer a brilliant relay format. You can tackle the course as a solo ultra-runner or split the distance by entering as a relay team of three or six. With specific stage changeovers and five fully stocked aid stations strategically placed along the route, the relay option allows running clubs and groups of friends to share the breathtaking scenery and the glory of the finish line together.
If you fancy taking on the longest and most scenic challenge of the festival, the William Wallace 70k ultra awaits. Please visit the official William Wallace Running Festival website for all the latest up-to-date details, entry availability, and mandatory kit requirements.
