Run to the Castle Ultramarathon - How Hard Can It Be?

Organised by How Hard Can It Be Events, the Run to the Castle Ultra is a 42 mile point-to-point ultramarathon that takes runners along the scenic Welsh coastline, finishing at a historic landmark.

Tracing the shores of Cardigan Bay, this race connects trail, beach and coastal path running. It offers a clear, linear route that serves as a solid challenge for both experienced coastal runners and those looking to step up to a longer distance in a supported environment.

Course

The course primarily follows the established Wales Coast Path, offering runners a varied northward journey.

  • The Start: The race begins in the coastal village of Aberdovey, heading north along the estuary.
  • The Terrain: Runners will encounter a true mix of underfoot conditions. The route incorporates long stretches of sandy beaches, grassy clifftops, coastal dunes, forestry tracks, and some connecting sections of paved paths and country lanes. Because of this varied terrain, road-to-trail hybrid shoes are a popular choice.
  • The Scenery: The route is flanked by the Irish Sea on one side and the edges of the Snowdonia National Park (Eryri) on the other, providing consistent coastal and mountain views.
  • The Finish: After 42 miles, the race concludes with a final, short ascent to the finish line at the 13th-century Harlech Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

There are 4 manned checkpoints along the course providing essential hydration and standard ultra-running snacks to keep runners fuelled.

While the Wales Coast Path is generally marked with its distinctive shell logo, participants are expected to carry a map or downloaded GPX file of the exact race route to navigate smoothly between the coastal sections.

Why Run the Run to the Castle Ultra?

If you are looking for an ultramarathon with a distinct sense of a journey, running from a seaside village to a medieval fortress provides a clear and motivating goal. The route's profile is relatively flat compared to mountain ultras, save for the dunes and the final climb to the castle, making it an accessible option for those new to the distance. With consistent coastal views and well-placed aid stations, it is a reliable and rewarding event on the Welsh ultramarathon calendar.
