Centurion South Downs Way 50km Ultramarathon

Experience one of the UK's most beloved national trails in this classic 50k ultramarathon. The Centurion South Downs Way 50km is a point-to-point race that takes you on a stunning journey over the iconic chalk hills of Southern England, delivering a challenging and rewarding day of pure trail running.

Part of the prestigious World Trail Majors series, this is an ultra marathon that attracts a fantastic mix of runners, from seasoned elites to those taking their very first steps into the world of ultra-distance running.

Course

This is a quintessential South Downs course. The 50km (31-mile) route is defined by its relentlessly rolling terrain, packing in a substantial 1,200m (4,000ft) of elevation gain. While the chalk paths are generally non-technical and runnable, the cumulative effect of the constant climbing is what makes this a true ultra challenge.

Your journey begins at the Matterley Bowl, just outside the ancient capital of Winchester. From there, you will join the famous South Downs Way National Trail, following its well-marked path eastwards. The route sticks to the chalk ridgeline, offering spectacular, panoramic views across the Hampshire countryside. You will traverse ancient forts and pass through beautiful, sheltered woodlands before a triumphant finish in the heart of Queen Elizabeth Country Park.

This is an ideal first ultra marathon for those who are strong on hills, thanks to the runnable terrain, generous 9-hour cut-off and 4 aid-stations. For full details about registration, please visit the Centurion ultra website.
