If you’re looking for a race that truly gets you into the wild heart of the North York Moors, then look no further. The Esk Valley Epic is exactly what it says on the tin, an epic, tough and breathtakingly beautiful ultra through one of the most stunning, and often overlooked, valleys in the country.
Forget flat, easy miles. This is a proper test of a trail runner's grit, with a route that’s as challenging as it is rewarding. It’s one of those races that leaves you with tired legs and a full heart.
This is a real rollercoaster of a course. The 36 mile (58km) route starts and finishes in the charming village of Glaisdale, taking you on a magnificent circular tour that follows the Esk Valley Walk.
Don't let the idyllic setting fool you. From the get-go, you're faced with classic North York Moors terrain. The route packs in a substantial 1,367m (4,487ft) of climbing, delivered in a series of steep, punchy ascents and quad-testing descents.
You’ll be running through ancient, bluebell-carpeted woodlands, along the beautiful River Esk, and up onto exposed, heather-clad moorland with vast, sweeping views. This isn't a race with one or two big hills; it’s a constant up-and-down battle that tests your climbing strength and descending nerve. It’s a tough day out, there’s no doubt about it, but the scenery is simply off the charts.
This is a race for the purists. If you love a proper, hilly trail challenge with a friendly, low-key atmosphere, then the Esk Valley Epic is for you. It’s brilliantly organised, incredibly scenic, and offers a true taste of the wild, untamed beauty of the North York Moors.
