The Wold Rangers Way Ultra is more than just a run through the countryside; it is a journey through a forgotten chapter of English rural history.
This 50km ultramarathon takes you along the ancient green lanes and bridleways once trodden by the "Wold Rangers", a community of nomadic agricultural workers who roamed the Yorkshire Wolds for centuries. Displaced by the Enclosure Acts and farm mechanisation, these folk travelled from farm to farm seeking shelter and seasonal work.
You’ll be following in the footsteps of local legends like Dog Geordie (the last of the Rangers), Ginger Joe (who famously refused to budge for the King), and Croom Mabel. It’s a race with genuine soul, set in one of the UK’s most underrated landscapes.
The course starts and finishes at the eco-friendly Field House Camping & Coffee Barn near Tibthorpe. From here, you head out into the heart of the Yorkshire Wolds, a landscape famous for its "dry valleys," steep-sided grassy dales that were carved by glacial meltwater but now have no rivers flowing through them.
It is a deceptively challenging route. While there are no mountains, the constant rolling nature of the Wolds means you’ll accumulate nearly 884m (3,000ft) of elevation. You’ll pass through picturesque villages including Huggate, Fridaythorpe, Thixendale, and Wetwang, running on a mix of grassy trails, field edges, and chalk paths.
The scenery is classic David Hockney country: big open skies, patchwork fields, and quiet, hidden valleys that feel miles away from the modern world.
You will be provided with a GPX file. While there are waymarkers (yellow arrows and tape) at key junctions, basic navigation skills are recommended as markers can sometimes go missing.
This is a friendly, low-pressure event. The race director and volunteers are known for their personal touch, expect a warm Yorkshire welcome at registration and a supportive atmosphere at every checkpoint. It’s less about elite competition and more about a shared day out in a beautiful, quiet corner of England.
