Hardmoors 30 50K Ultra Marathon

Kickstart your race year with a true North York Moors classic. The Hardmoors 30 is a legendary winter ultramarathon that serves as a brutal but beautiful introduction to the Hardmoors race series. This is a ultra that will test your resilience against the elements and reward you with some of the most spectacular coastal scenery in the UK.

Starting and finishing in the iconic smuggling village of Robin Hood's Bay, this is a race that perfectly encapsulates the Hardmoors ethos: stunningly beautiful and seriously tough.

Course

Don't be fooled by the name; this is a "Hardmoors 30," meaning it's actually closer to 31 miles (49km). Taking place in the depths of January, the primary challenge is often the wild winter weather and the typically muddy, technical terrain.

Beginning at Fylingdales Village Hall, the route heads south from Robin Hood's Bay. You'll follow the Cinder Track through Ravenscar and Hayburn Wyke before reaching the outskirts of Scarborough at Scalby Mills. This is the turnaround point where you'll join the Cleveland Way national trail for the punishing journey back north.

The return leg is where this ultra marathon truly shows its teeth. The coastal path involves a series of steep, leg-sapping climbs and descents as it winds its way along the cliff tops. You'll need to dig deep on this section before the final, triumphant return to Robin Hood's Bay.

The raw, windswept beauty of the North Yorkshire coast in winter is something to behold, and finishing this ultra gives you an immense sense of accomplishment and serious bragging rights. It’s the perfect, tough start to any ultra runner's year.
