Heart of Wales 50K Ultramarathon

Head deep into the "Green Desert" of Wales. The Heart of Wales Ultra Marathon (HOWUM) is a stunning 50K (30 mile) circular race that explores the wild tranquillity of the Cambrian Mountains and the legendary source of the River Severn.

This is the second ultramarathon in the Pegasus Slam calendar. Based in the historic market town of Llanidloes, the HOWUM offers a route that is equal parts scenic beauty and runnable trail. If you want to experience the true, quiet heart of Wales away from the crowds of Snowdonia, this is the race for you.

Course

This 50km (30 mile) loop is a showcase of Mid-Wales' finest landscapes. Starting from Llanidloes, you will head out towards the spectacular Llyn Clywedog Reservoir, running along the scenic Glyndŵr's Way National Trail. The route offers massive panoramic views over the dam before plunging into the atmospheric Hafren Forest.

The highlight of the race is the climb to the Source of the Severn. Standing on the high moorland, looking down at the trickle that becomes the UK's longest river, is a bucket-list moment for any trail runner. From there, it’s a journey back through the forestry and rolling hills to the finish line in Llanidloes.

The terrain is a mix of well-maintained trails, forest fire roads, and grassy moorland paths. It is runnable, but with plenty of undulation to keep your legs working.

Whether you are an elite runner chasing a sub-4 hour finish or a walker soaking up the scenery over 10 hours, the finish line stays open until the last person is home.
