Beyond Manchester 55K Ultramarathon
If you think you know Manchester, think again. The Beyond Manchester 55km Ultra Marathon is a unique "urban ultra" that proves you don't need to travel to the Lake District to find a proper adventure. This race takes you from the heart of the city's industrial heritage to the green belts and wilder fringes that surround it.
Starting and finishing at the iconic Castlefield Bowl, this event offers one of the most accessible ultra-marathon experiences in the UK. It is a perfect hybrid of road and trail, blending city sights with disused railways, canal towpaths, and woodland trails.
Course
The 55km looped course is a journey through the history and nature of the region. Leaving the city centre, you will head out towards the Manchester Ship Canal, running past the gleaming media hub of Salford Quays and the imposing Old Trafford stadium.
From there, the route transforms. You will leave the urban sprawl behind, following disused railway lines and green corridors north towards Bolton and Bury. A major highlight of the course is a long stretch on the famous Irwell Sculpture Trail, where art and nature meet in the river valley.
The return leg brings you back towards the city, offering a spectacular finish back at Castlefield. With only around 270m of elevation gain across the entire 55km, this is an exceptionally flat and fast ultra, making it a prime candidate for a personal best or a first-time completion.
There are 3 well-stocked aid stations along the course and a generous cut-off time of 11 hours.
