Tower to Castle 30 Mile (48KM) Ultra Marathon

Swap massive mountain climbs for sweeping coastal views and a uniquely varied route. The Tower to Castle Ultra is a phenomenal 31 mile (48km) point-to-point ultramarathon that connects two of the North West's most famous landmarks: the iconic Blackpool Tower and the historic Lancaster Castle.

Hosted by the fantastic team at Lancashire Trails (A.K.A Fylde Coast Runners) and heavily featured on the Lancashire trail running circuit, this is an ultra-marathon with a twist. Blending fast promenades, quiet country lanes, and coastal trails, alongside a mid-race ferry crossing, it offers an incredibly memorable day out. Whether you are a road marathoner looking for an accessible, flat gateway into ultra-running or a seasoned endurance athlete hunting for a 50km personal best, this course delivers.

Course

The 30 mile (approx. 48km) route is brilliantly diverse, breaking the distance down into distinct, engaging sections that keep your mind occupied.

  • The Terrain: You will experience a true mixture of underfoot conditions. The route features around 9 miles of paved coastal promenades, 6 miles of quiet country lanes, and 15 miles of off-road coastal paths and disused railway lines. Road-to-trail hybrid shoes are highly recommended for this blended terrain.
  • The Elevation: Unlike the gruelling, mountainous ultras of the nearby Lake District, the Tower to Castle Ultra is exceptionally flat. With barely 472ft (144m) of total elevation gain across the entire 30 miles, this is a fast, highly runnable course.
  • The Ferry Hop: The standout feature of this race is the water crossing! Mid-route, runners board the Fleetwood Ferry for a short trip across the Wyre estuary to Knott End. Your start time is carefully calculated based on your estimated finish time to ensure a smooth transition across the water.

Event Support and Logistics

Running a point-to-point 50km ultra marathon solid organisation, and the event team ensures a highly supportive and hassle-free experience.

  • Checkpoints and Navigation: The course is thoroughly waymarked, with marshals positioned at key road crossings. You will be supported by four well-stocked checkpoints offering essential hydration and ultra-running fuel to keep your energy levels high.
  • Finish Line Logistics: To keep you comfortable after your run, the organisers provide a single bag transfer to the finish line at Lancaster Castle. You will have warm, dry clothes waiting for you the moment you stop running.
