The Spire Ultra Marathon 33 Miles (53KM)

Looking for a proper old-school ultra that’s packed with variety and stunning scenery? Let me introduce you to the Spire Ultra, a fantastic 33 mile (53km) loop of Chesterfield that takes you on a surprisingly wild journey around the town of the crooked spire.

This is one of those races that seems to fly under the radar, but it’s a real gem. It’s got a bit of everything, from windswept moors to ancient woodlands, making for a tough but incredibly rewarding day out on the trails.

Course

The Spire Ultra follows the 33 mile (53km) circuit of the Chesterfield Round Walk, a route that constantly changes character and keeps you on your toes. This is no flat-track race; the course is a decent test with a brilliant mix of terrain.

This ultramarathon starts at North Wingfield Community Resource Centre and heads out west from the town and up into the good stuff. You’ll find yourself running over high, exposed moorland and through beautiful ancient woods, passing by picturesque reservoirs along the way. It feels surprisingly remote and rugged for a race that circles a major town.

As the route swings around to the eastern side, the landscape softens into rolling farmland and trails that weave through restored former mining areas, now reclaimed by nature. It’s this variety that makes the race so special, one minute you’re battling the wind on the moors, the next you’re cruising through peaceful woodland. It’s a proper tour of the hidden landscapes on Chesterfield’s doorstep.

If you love a low-key, well-organised race with a friendly, community feel, this one is for you! For full details on the Spire 33 Mile Ultra in Chesterfield, please visit the official race website.
