Beacon Hill Backyard Ultra - Leicestershire

Prepare to test your physical limits and mental fortitude in one of the Midlands' most beautiful and rugged landscapes. Brought to you by the passionate team at Beacon Race Events, the Beacon Hill Backyard Ultra brings the brutal, brilliant "Last One Standing" format to the ancient rocks and woodlands of Leicestershire.

Set within the stunning Beacon Hill Country Park, this event strips away the traditional finish line. Whether you are using the generous hourly cut-offs to secure your very first ultra-marathon distance, or you are an elite endurance athlete aiming to run deep into a second day, this race is the ultimate equaliser. Speed does not win a Backyard Ultra; stubbornness does.

The Backyard Format: The Ultimate Mental Battle

If you are new to the Backyard Ultra (BYU) concept, the rules are unforgiving and highly addictive:

  • The Distance: The course is a set, looped route measuring exactly 4.167 miles (6.706 kilometres).
  • The Clock: You have exactly 60 minutes to complete the loop and return to the starting corral.
  • The Bell: Every hour, exactly on the hour, the starting bell rings. If you are not standing in the starting pen ready to run when it chimes, you are out of the race.
  • The Winner: The event continues indefinitely until only one runner remains to complete a final solo lap. Every other participant, whether they ran 4 miles or 104 miles, receives a DNF (Did Not Finish).

Course

While some Backyard Ultras seek out perfectly flat pavement, the Beacon Hill route is a true trail runner's challenge.

  • The Terrain: You will be navigating a beautifully varied loop through the 135-hectare country park. Expect a mixture of hard-packed woodland trails, grassy paths, and sections near the park's iconic, rugged rock formations.
  • The Elevation: Beacon Hill is the second-highest point in Leicestershire. While the organisers have carefully mapped a runnable loop, the route features continuous, rolling undulations. Over 12, 24 or 36 hours, these seemingly small climbs will heavily compound, making your pacing and uphill walking strategy absolutely vital.
  • The Night Shift: As dusk falls, the sweeping views over the Charnwood Forest disappear, and the race shrinks to the solitary beam of your headtorch. Navigating the twisting woodland trails in the dark requires intense focus and excellent sleep-deprivation management.

Basecamp and the Event Village

Because you return to the exact same location every single hour, your basecamp setup is critical to your success.

  • The Corral: Runners and their support crews are allocated space near the start/finish line to pitch up. This is your personal sanctuary to change socks, refuel, and snatch a few minutes of rest before the next bell.
  • The Atmosphere: The community vibe at a Backyard Ultra is completely unmatched. You will share the trail with runners of all abilities, and the downtime in the village is filled with incredible camaraderie, mutual encouragement, and the brilliant support of the Beacon Race Events volunteer team.

The Beacon Hill Backyard Ultra offers a staggeringly beautiful, undulating trail route that will test your leg strength far more than a flat road loop.
