Cape Wrath 400K Ultra Marathon

OUREA EVENTS HAS CEASED TRADING

If you are looking for the ultimate UK multi-stage adventure, this is it. The Cape Wrath Ultra is not just a race, it is an expedition through the last true wilderness of Great Britain.

Covering 400km (250 miles) over 8 days, this epic journey takes you from Fort William to the most north-westerly point of the UK mainland: the iconic Cape Wrath lighthouse. It is widely considered one of the world's finest ultra running experiences, offering a unique blend of camaraderie, brutal terrain, and breath taking Scottish scenery.

Course

Based on the famous Cape Wrath Trail, often cited as the toughest backpacking trail in Britain, this race condenses a 20-day hike into an 8-day ultra marathon.

You will travel through some of the most remote and spectacular landscapes in Europe, including Knoydart, Kintail, Torridon, and Assynt. Expect to run through ancient glens, traverse high mountain passes, and skirt the edges of deep sea lochs. The terrain is notoriously technical and varied; you’ll tackle boggy moorland, rocky singletrack, and unbridged river crossings that require nerve and skill.

The Stages: The route is broken down into daily stages ranging from 26km to 72km, with varying elevation profiles. While some days offer runnable tracks, others are pure mountain grit. You must navigate yourself (GPS is allowed), but the route is not waymarked, adding a genuine element of exploration.

What sets the Cape Wrath Ultra apart is the camp life. Organised by Ourea Events (the team behind the Dragon’s Back Race), the logistics are seamless.

Each night, you arrive at a remote overnight camp where your tent is pitched, your dry bag is waiting, and, crucially, hot food is ready. The "camp bubble" creates an incredible bond between runners. You’ll share stories of the day’s battles with people from all over the world, forging friendships that last long after the blisters heal.

Make no mistake, this is a serious undertaking. You need to be a competent mountain runner with solid navigation skills. However, for those who want to experience the Highlands in their rawest, most beautiful form, without the hassle of carrying a full camping pack, there is simply no better event. Please visit the official race website to the most up-to-date info, including registration details.

Quick Note: If the full 400km ultra sounds too daunting, check out the Cape Wrath Explorer (half-course option).
