Montane Dragon's Back Race® Ultramarathon

The Dragon's Back Race, is a multi-day (380km) ultramarathon widely considered one of the toughest mountain races globally. It traverses the mountainous spine of Wales from north to south.

Course

The Dragon's Back Race follows a route designed to connect the major Welsh mountains, often traversing wild, trackless, and remote terrain. The course guides participants through two of Wales' National Parks: Snowdonia in the north and the Brecon Beacons in the south, along with numerous lesser-visited peaks.

Each of the six days presents a distinct challenge:

  • Day 1 (approx. 49km / 3,800m+ ascent): Starts from Conwy Castle, immediately tackling the mountains of Northern Snowdonia, including peaks like Pen yr Ole Wen, Tryfan, Glyder Fawr, and a demanding section over Crib Goch (a Grade 1 scramble), before finishing near Nant Gwynant.
  • Day 2 (approx. 58km / 3,400m+ ascent): Continues through Southern Snowdonia, encountering peaks such as Moelwyn Mawr and Rhinog Fawr.
  • Day 3 (approx. 70km / 3,400m+ ascent): Moves into the Cambrian Mountains, crossing Cadair Idris and ascending Pen Pumlumon Fawr.
  • Day 4 (approx. 70km / 2,000m+ ascent): Often described as more runnable, this day traverses sections of the Elan Valley.
  • Day 5 (approx. 70km / 3,200m+ ascent): Leads through the Brecon Beacons, crossing its main peaks, including Pen y Fan.
  • Day 6 (approx. 64km / 1,600m+ ascent): The final day, transitioning from the mountains through valleys and along the Taff Trail, concluding at Cardiff Castle.

The route is not marked on the ground; participants are required to navigate using a GPS device (trackers are supplied) and/or map and compass. Sections of the course involve very rough, off-path terrain and significant exposure.

The Dragon's Back Race is recognised for its stringent organisation and its status as a world-class mountain running challenge. Completion of the Full Dragon earns participants the coveted "Dragon Slayer" status.
