The Tunnel 200 Mile Ultramarathon is possibly the UK's most mind bending ultra challenge. Participants have to complete 200 miles through darkness within 55 hours. This unique event takes place within a historic, unlit railway tunnel, demanding a particular blend of physical resilience and mental fortitude against repetition and prolonged darkness.
The Tunnel 200 mile ultramarathon is structured on an out-and-back course, primarily following the Combe Down Tunnel which extends for approximately 1.05 miles (1.69 km). Participants will complete 100 'out-n-backs' to accumulate the full 200 miles.
The terrain consists of former railway lines, providing a consistent, hard-packed surface. The core challenge lies in the unlit interior of the Combe Down Tunnel, where runners experience continuous darkness, coolness, and dampness, requiring constant headtorch use. The repetitive nature of the out-and-back format, combined with the unique tunnel environment, presents a distinct mental test alongside the physical demands of a 200-mile ultra.
The Tunnel 200 Mile Ultramarathon is suited for ultra-runners who excel on runnable, non-technical terrain, possess exceptional mental fortitude for repetitive loops and prolonged darkness, and are prepared for a multi-day test of endurance.
All applicants MUST have a minimum of a 100 miler as a qualifier.
