Prepare for a true northern odyssey. The Summits of The North York Moors Ultra isn't just a race; it’s a 120 mile ultra marathon through one of the most ancient and evocative landscapes in the UK.
Brought to you by the passionate team at Silverback Trails, this event challenges you to bag the ten highest peaks in the North York Moors National Park in a single, continuous push. It’s a beast of a route that combines history, brutal elevation, and the raw, exposed beauty of the moors.
This is a serious undertaking for the committed ultrarunner. The circular route covers approximately 120 miles and packs in a colossal 4,876m (16,000ft) of ascent.
You won't just be running on trails; you'll be following in the footsteps of Bronze Age tribes, Roman legions, and Viking raiders. The course weaves together sections of the famous Cleveland Way, the Esk Valley Walk, and the Lyke Wake Walk, taking you over ancient trods, drove roads, and moorland tracks that have existed for millennia.
The terrain is diverse and demanding. Expect technical descents, exposed heather moorland that stretches to the horizon, and steep climbs that will test your legs and your resolve. You'll pass medieval boundary stones, ancient crosses, and burial mounds, constant reminders of the history beneath your feet.
This is a race that champions self-sufficiency. Unlike many modern ultras, no support crews are allowed. It’s just you, the moors, and your fellow runners.
However, you aren't completely alone. Silverback Trails are renowned for their warm, runner-centric support. There are indoor checkpoints at approximately 40 and 80 miles where you can access your drop bag, get hot food (think jacket potatoes and noodles), and even grab a power nap if the clock allows.
If you are looking for an antidote to the over-commercialised ultra scene, this is it. It’s a raw, honest, and deeply atmospheric race. The 35-hour cut-off is tight enough to keep you moving but generous enough to allow for the sheer scale of the elevation. Crossing the finish line in Goathland, after traversing the roof of the moors, is an achievement that will stay with you for a lifetime.
