Foxton Hound 100K Ultra Marathon

Organised by Race Harborough, the Foxton Hound 100K is a formidable ultramarathon that takes runners on an extensive journey through the rural landscapes surrounding Market Harborough. Following the Harborough Round long-distance footpath, this event crosses the borders of Northamptonshire and Leicestershire, offering a brilliant mix of historical landmarks and challenging terrain for seasoned ultra runners.

Licensed by the Trail Running Association (TRA) and held under UK Athletics rules, this 100K ultra provides a well-supported, highly scenic challenge. From ancient battlefields to dark railway tunnels, the route constantly shifts in character, keeping runners engaged from start to finish.

Course

The course utilises the Harborough Round, ensuring a varied and culturally rich journey through the English countryside.

  • The Terrain: The route features a fair amount of elevation gain, balanced by highly runnable downhill sections. It frequently intersects with other iconic long-distance footpaths, including The Jurassic Way, The Leicestershire Round, The Macmillan Way, The Midshires Way, The Richard the Third Trail and The Uppingham Round.
  • Historical Landmarks: Runners will pass through a series of picturesque villages, including Houghton on the Hill, West Haddon, Coton and Stoke Albany. The route also takes in the famous Foxton Locks and the historic Naseby Battle Field.
  • The Kelmarsh Tunnel: A standout feature of the race is a subterranean stretch along the Brampton Valley Way, requiring runners to navigate the pitch-black, 480 metre long Kelmarsh Tunnel.

Event Support and Free Guided Recces

Race Harborough places a strong emphasis on community and runner confidence, offering support both before and during the event.

  • Free Guided Recces: To alleviate the stress of race-day navigation, the organisers host a series of free guided recce runs leading up to the event. These sessions allow registered runners to build confidence on the route and offer a great opportunity for the local trail-running community to connect.
  • Live Tracking: Every participant is issued a GPS tracker from Open Tracking at registration (securely taped to your hydration vest or pack). This ensures race control can monitor your progress and allows friends and family to follow your race online.
  • Checkpoints and Medical: The route features multiple aid stations manned by Race Harborough volunteers, providing essential hydration and ultra-running nutrition. Professional first aid teams are stationed at the start and finish, with mobile units ready to access runners on the course if needed.

The Foxton Hound 100K is a superb option for endurance athletes looking for a thoroughly engaging, well-organised race in the Midlands. The varied terrain, combined with the unique historical features and the brilliant addition of free guided recces, makes it a highly accessible yet somewhat demanding 100K. It is a fantastic opportunity to test your legs on a route that celebrates the rich heritage and natural beauty of the Northamptonshire and Leicestershire countryside.
